Escape into a Good Book

Eagle Wealth Management |

We don’t know about you, but some of us in the office are feeling a little burnt out from all the screen time—not just from computer work, but from the endless stream of on-demand content everywhere.

Sometimes, the best escape is as simple as picking up a good book.

As Dr. Seuss wrote: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Whether you want to explore new ideas, dive into a new hobby, or just unwind, books are a great way to take a break and refresh your mind.

Need a place to start? Your local library has tons of free books, audiobooks, and more—no commitment, no cost. If you don’t love it, just swap it for something new!

Join a book club.

The Deschutes Public Library organizes a month-long program called A Novel Idea where community members read the same book and can gather at libraries across Central Oregon for group discussions a couple times a week. The program ends with a presentation from the author.

Interested in meeting more authors?

The Deschutes Public Library Foundation hosts the Author! Author! literary series bringing award-winning authors to Central Oregon to share their books and engage with readers. You could also check your local Barnes & Noble store for author events—here’s what’s coming to Barnes & Noble in Bend.

Going digital is still an option.

Don’t want to carry around a heavy book? Most libraries these days have e-books or audio books for your convenience. The Deschutes Public Library has a variety of materials available to download. You could also try using apps like Kindle or Audible to read and listen to books digitally.

Need help deciding what to read?

Whatever your interests are, there’s sure to be something out there for you.

The Week on Wall Street

Stocks moved lower last week as investors swung from exuberance to disappointment on news over tariffs and inflation.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fell 1.53 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite Index retreated 2.59 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.96 percent. The MSCI EAFE Index, which tracks developed overseas stock markets, declined 1.29 percent.2,3

An Up and Down Week

Stocks started the week with a sharp rally after the White House said it may “give a lot of countries breaks” on reciprocal tariffs. The positive momentum continued into Tuesday, with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 outpacing the Dow.4

Then, midweek, news that the White House was planning additional tariffs on all cars made outside the U.S. rattled markets.5,6

On Friday, investors reacted to a warmer-than-expected inflation report and lower consumer sentiment, putting further pressure on stocks as the week closed.7

Noise vs. Signal

There can be a lot of noise in the market from time to time. This can make it hard for investors to interpret information as they search for the actual signal.

Last week, investors were trying to interpret the White House decision to impose tariffs on all cars and some car parts made outside of the U.S. While some automakers are domestic and others are foreign-based, the question is whether companies will absorb the additional costs, pass them on to consumers, or look to build factories in the United States.8

Separating the noise from the signal may take time, which can be more challenging when the markets react to new tariff updates as they are announced.
